Costa Rica

The Magic and Wonder of the Great Outdoors

The pristine country of Costa Rica is incredibly well-suited to eco and outdoor-oriented honeymoons. Here you will find natural wonders, animal life, adventure activities, beaches, rainforests and intimate accommodations. The overall setting is romantic, beautiful, and diversified, and much of the country can be seen in 10 to 14 days, although you may be tempted to stay longer! While Costa Rica has many lovely beaches, this is not what makes it so special - it's what's beyond the beaches that makes it a great honeymoon destination.

Just the Facts

Best suited for:

Couples looking for an eco-friendly experience in a tropical country. Those who want a combination of outdoor activities, small and unique accommodations, and water sports. Those who enjoy the beach but are concerned they may get bored after a few days.

When to go:

High season is December - April, when Costa Rica is at its driest. During this time, there are many tourists and prices are higher. May through November, the rainiest period, is often referred to as "Green Season" due to the resulting lush vegetation. In general, coastal temperatures run 70 - 86F (21 - 30C), whereas inland temps are a bit cooler 60 - 79F (15 - 26C), largely due to higher altitudes.

Accommodations:

Costa Rica is mostly known for its smaller lodges, inns, and boutique-type accommodations. Many are romantic, colorful, and cater to honeymooners. There are also a number of large, full-service resorts which tend to focus on the mass market. For those wanting to really bond with nature, there are some outstanding eco-lodges.

Dining:

Local cuisine is quite mild. Most dishes are centered around rice and beans, with beef, chicken or fish alongside. Fresh fruit and fried plantains are also quite common. While dining in Costa Rica is usually satisfying, it is far from gourmet. Don't forget to try the rich, locally-grown coffee. In general, the best dining by international standards is often found in the top lodges and hotels.

Special Activities:

River rafting, wildlife spotting, viewing active volcanoes and hiking on non-active ones, horseback riding, surfing, visits to waterfalls and coffee plantations, zip line tours through the rainforest canopy.
