The Colonial Cities

Culture, Art and Beauty

When many folks think of Mexico, they envision beautiful beaches, fun resorts and tasty food. While all of these elements do exist, Mexico is also blessed with a rich culture, interesting sights and lovely villages. This itinerary will take you on a leisurely journey through Central Mexico's engaging colonial cities. All aspects of this honeymoon incorporate Mexico's vibrant cultural traditions, from fine dining, to lively central plazas, to contemplative archeological sites, to beautiful mountain scenery. Who would have thought that you could get a taste of Iberia so close to home?

Upon arrival in Leon, you will pick up your rental car and drive east for a little over an hour to reach the sophisticated colonial town of San Miguel de Allende. Founded in 1542, this mountain village grew wealthy on the back of silver mining. Now, it is best known as a center for art and culture, all surrounded by spectacular scenery. In fact, the entire town has been declared a National Historic Monument.

Spend your days relaxing at...

a cafe on the Plaza Allende or meandering your way along the town's narrow cobblestone streets. Along the way, you will discover quiet squares, 18th-Century mansions, art galleries, boutique shops and ancient churches. Soak it up! Casa de Sierra NevadaYour base in town will be the lovely Casa de Sierra Nevada, a stylish inn that mixes colonial charm and modern refinement. The property is actually comprised of five historic mansions interspersed with quiet courtyards. To unwind, visit the aromatherapy spa or lounge by the 40-ft pool.

After enjoying the slow life in San Miguel...

it's time to jump in the car and head south to the larger colonial city of Querétaro. Strolling along the town's tree-lined streets or through the Jardin Guerrero, it wouldn't be irrational to think that you had been magically transported across the pond to any one of Spain's great cities. The cafes surrounding the bustling, pedestrian-only Plaza de la Independencia are terrific spots for people watching and nursing a cerveza or two.

One of the highlights of visiting Querétaro is...

a stay at La Casa de la Marquesa, an ornate 18th-Century mansion-turned-hotel. What does it feel like to live like the Marques? A couple days here and you'll have your answer - Persian rugs, vivid frescos, ornamental tile work and Gobelin tapestries. Simply amazing.

The final leg of your honeymoon will take you south to Mexico City, the capital of the country. On the way, however, there are a couple of noteworthy stops, especially for those with an interest in history and archeology. First up is the ancient pyramid of Tula (temple of the morning star), which is capped by a collection of unusual statues that represent Toltec gods.

Farther on down the road is...

the town of Tepotzotlán, a relaxed spot that hosts the Museo Nacional del Virreinato, home to one of the finest collections of Baroque and colonial art in the country. After taking in your fill of art and sights, your last stop is vibrant Mexico City. Check in at the exclusive Four Seasons Hotel, right on the Paseo de la Reforma in the heart of the city's historic district. Lay by the pool, visit the spa or head out to explore the city. Don't forget to do some last minute shopping in the hip boutiques in the Zona Rosa.

In the end, you will leave Mexico with a new found appreciation for the country's history and culture, but not at the expense of comfort and luxury.
