Honeymoon Bliss in the Serengeti

Romance on the plains of the Serengeti
Romance on the plains of the Serengeti

What would the perfect honeymoon safari in Tanzania look like? Of course there would be incredible game viewing! But to that we would add professional Masai guides, world-class conservation efforts, stunning accommodations, excellent food, unbelievably caring service, and attention to every detail surrounding the guest experience. It would be a profound journey into the animal kingdom, elevated by hospitality unmatched anywhere in east Africa.

Fortunately this kind of honeymoon bliss does already exist at the Singita Grumeti Reserves, located in the western corridor of the Serengeti. The Singita lodges, all within an easy 45-minute game drive of one another, each bring a unique point of view to the safari and the honeymoon experience.

You'll start your honeymoon in extraordinary...

comfort – after landing your first night will be spent at Arusha Coffee Lodge, just outside the main safari starting point of Arusha in northern Tanzania. The lodge welcomes you with your own "plantation home" for the evening, complete with roaring fireplace, and a relaxing dinner in their acclaimed restaurant, Redd's African Grill. Most importantly, however, is a hot bath and good night's sleep in your four-poster bed, for tomorrow your honeymoon adventure begins!

You'll take the early charter to...

the Sasakwa airstrip, where your welcoming committee of baboons scatters as your plane lands. Your expert ranger, born and raised in these parts, will be waiting Singita Saborato bring you, via your first game drive, to Sabora Plains Tented Camp, your home for the next three nights. As the name implies, Sabora is set within the Serengeti's open plains so you'll be in close proximity to the animals, and they do wander through camp! The luxurious canvas tents are complete with period antiques, comfortable beds, full bathrooms, and wooden decks from which to reflect upon the day's events as the sun sets – their bartender will no doubt concoct an amazing sundowner to facilitate complete relaxation.

After a great dinner, you'll...

fall asleep to the wild sounds of the night, adding an audio component to your honeymoon journey. Be sure to treat yourselves to a relaxing arrival massage in the spa tent, and surprise your new spouse with a sunrise hot-air balloon ride so as to view game from yet another point of view – the air! A spirit of adventure and romance permeate Sabora Plains, and many guests find this camp to embody the word "safari".

Only 45 minutes away, Faru Faru Lodge brings yet another dimension to your honeymoon. Set on the banks of the Grumeti River, the terrain here is wooded, rocky, and uneven. Mother Nature is on full display, and the design of the lodge takes advantage of gifts she has given. Riverine stone features prominently in the structure of the main lodge, swimming pools, dining room and lounge. Sink into simple comfort in your suite and "let Africa in" by means of the outdoor shower, the Swarovski spotting scope on the veranda, or the large picture window, operated by remote-control. Is that an elephant lounging next to your deck? Pull on your fleece, put on your flip flops, and share your wildebeest and crocodile stories with others around the congenial boma (campfire) as staff serve yummy canapés and pre-dinner drinks. You'll feel a sense of belonging at Faru Faru, both at the lodge and while on the game drives in this unique corner of the Grumeti Reserves.

After two starry nights at Faru Faru, it's on to...

Singita's flagship lodge, Sasakwa. This stunning property is perched on the edge of an escarpment and affords sweeping vistas of the Serengeti plains and their game below. The sun's colors change during the course of the day, but no matter where you turn, the view is set like indelible ink into your memory. Guests reside in individual villas, reminiscent of an Edwardian manor, with gorgeous stone walls, mahogany furnishings, plunge pools, and claw-footed tubs.

When not on game drives, other diversions beckon...

such as tennis, a full-service spa, gym and equestrian center. After nearly a week on safari, skip the morning game drive one day to have breakfast in (the very comfy) bed, admiring the view in the process. You'll enjoy getting to know the staff while at Sasakwa and the other lodges – they take pleasure in learning about their guests and sharing their own personal histories.

After a beautiful week, it's...

unfortunately time to go home. As you take off from the airstrip, you'll see your Ranger waving goodbye, and you'll press your nose to the glass for one last giraffe or zebra sighting from the air. Having had so many special experiences, you'll leave the Singita Grumeti Reserves vowing to come back one day, preferably as soon as possible.

Special Note: This honeymoon can easily be combined with time in the Seychelles, Zanzibar or other parts of Tanzania if you so desire.
